COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The
law enforcement officials in Columbus are investigating a shooting incident
where two persons were shot in the east side of Columbus in a home where a
party was held Saturday, according to the reports.
The home where the party was held is located in the 700 block of
South Champion Avenue. The party was held Saturday evening. The officers from
the Columbus Division of Police responded to the scene after shots were fired
inside the home and two persons were reported to have been shot.
Other news media outlet reported that shooting took place after
a fight melee broke out between two groups of males who were at the party. Some
said that they were shouting their gang affiliations prior to the shooting incident.
Investigators also believed that the incident is gang related.
They also said that the argument between the two groups started everything.
This was also confirmed by several witnesses who were at the scene, according
to the reports.
Columbus police officers were able to identify a suspect in the
incident and were taken into custody. He is identified as 19-year-old Thomas
Woodruff. He is being held on two counts of felonious assault, records show.
Reports also indicated that witnesses told the investigators
that he was the one who fired several shots into the crowd. The shooting
injured two people. One of the victims was a girl.
Columbus Division of Police identified the first victim as
twenty-two-year-old Jovan Gayles. Medic personnel transported the victim to the
Grant Medical Center where he was treated from a single gunshot wound to his
lower right leg. He is expected to survive.
The second victim is a 13-year-old girl. Her name was not
immediately given. She was transported to the Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Hospital officials say that she is being treated from a gunshot wound to her
back and she is in a serious condition.
